Converse All Star Chuck Taylors Legacy

Converse All Star Chuck Taylors Legacy

The sneaker originally launched in natural brown colours with black trim. In the 1920s, Converse All Stars were then made in all black canvas or leather versions. Their popularity gave them the title of being the first mass produced basketball shoe in North America.

Thanks to Charles "Chuck" Taylor, an American semi-professional basketball player who joined Converse as a salesman in 1921, Converse sales of the sneaker skyrocketed. It seems that after Taylor's signature was added to the ankle patch as his endorsement, they became known as Chuck Taylor All Stars, the first celebrity-endorsed athletic shoe.

Chuck Taylor also designed the white high top model for the 1936 Olympics with its patriotic red and blue trim they became very popular alongside the all black canvas and leather models of the All Star.

In 1962, Converse rolled out its first low profile version of the Chuck Taylor All-Stars called Oxford in 1957. The Oxford was available in various colours and a welcome change from the black and white options.

The Converse Chuck Taylor is one of the most influential sneakers of all time. Since 1970, these high-top sneakers have been running from hoop to hoop on numerous basketball courts, Converse championed the Non-Skids as a revolutionary performance product and later evolved along the way into the staple footwear in everyone’s closet. Converse introduced Chuck 70 in 2013.

So what's the difference between Chuck Taylor and All Star?

The All Star logo patch featured on the inside of the heel (high top) is embroidered instead of printed. That said, the most notable difference with the Chuck Taylor Star stems from the hood, with additional cushioning, a lime-green sock liner crafted from a proprietary Nike foam called Lunarlon.

History says Converse is here to stay

Despite all the innovations and changes within the athletic shoe industry, Chuck Taylor sneakers continue to live on! The All Star’s accessible price point and versatility has seen the shoe move into different subcultures and music genres through the 80’s and 90’s. With a huge influence in hip hop to some of the biggest rockstars on the planet lacing up their Chucks, the shoe has had a similar impact on music as it did basketball when it was first introduced.

The Converse All Star “Chuck Taylor” still remains fashionable and people who like chucks are fanatical in their devotion to the shoes. Thousands of pairs of high top and low cut chucks are still sold each week worldwide. Because they are a unisex design, the same sneakers are worn by both men and women, girls and boys.
