Because of the sneaker's popularity, you most likely own a pair or two, but how well do you know the All Star Converse story and how far they have come since its inception in 1917? Studio 88 gives a brief history lesson on the well-loved All Star sneaker brand.

"Converse Chuck Taylor All Star - Because not all stars belong in the sky. Some grace the courts, the streets, and of course, our feet" - Studio 88.

As millions of All Star enthusiasts know, All Star or Chucks come in many variations and colours, with famous celebrities and musicians such as James Dean, Common, Elvis Presley, and Kurt Cobain, to name a few, sporting a pair of famous All Star Chucks'! In 1969, Wilt Chamberlain wore them on the court when he scored 100 points in a single N.B.A. game, making All Star sneakers a global symbol of pop culture on the courts, the stage, and the street.

Now, 106 years later, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star has undoubtedly become one of the most popular sneaker brands. Here's a little background on how the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker morphed from a basketball court shoe to an everyday fashion staple.

The History of The Converse Chuck Taylor All Star

The Converse Rubber Company, founded by Marquis Mills Converse in 1908 in Malden, Massachusetts, specialised in winterised rubber-soled footwear. As basketball's popularity grew, so did the need for basketball court shoes, and it was only a short time before Converse began its historical invention of the basketball shoe.

Nine years later, in 1917, the Converse All Star was introduced under the name "Non-Skids." These high-top silhouettes comprised rubbers soles, canvas uppers, cushioned insoles, arch and heel support, and the now iconic diamond tread pattern designed for increased traction. A few years later, a basketball player named Chuck Taylor joined Converse as a salesman. Having personally experienced the numerous issues with basketball shoes at the time, Taylor was overflowing with ideas on improving them. During his first year at the company, Converse had taken Taylor's advice and restyled the shoe to improve and enhance the shoe's flexibility and ankle support. In 1922, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star was invented as the world's first celebrity-endorsed athletic shoe.

In the years that followed, Taylor travelled around, promoting the shoes to basketball clinics, leading to increased participation in the sport. By the 1930s, the Chuck Taylor All Star had become a favourite amongst college and professional basketball players. Having become synonymous with the sport, the Chuck Taylor signature was stamped onto All Star's circular ankle patch in 1932. By 1936 the Converse All Star was momentously adopted as the official Olympics shoe, giving birth to the iconic white model with patriotic red and blue accents that remain Converse's most-loved design to this day.
